Panthers Fall to Visiting Predators
The Nashville Predators came to town and get a last minute goal to beat the Panthers 2-1. This was a very tight game in which nothing went well for Florida. Five first period penalties limited the Panthers offense to just nine shots on goal. The penalty kill held up until the second period when Ryan Smyth gave the Preds a 1-0 lead on a power play goal. Assists went to Scott Walker and Kimmo Timonen on the Smyth goal. Early in the third period after pressuring Nashville in the second period, Jay Bouwmeester finally broke through for the Panthers scoring his 8th goal of the season. Assists on that goal went to David Booth and Kyle Calder. Holding Nashville to 4 shots in the final two period, the home team crowd was stunned when the last of those four shots found its way through to give the visiting team the win with only seven seconds left on the clock in the third period. "I just cannot believe that we can put up 40 shots in a night and come away with only one stinkin goal," said Panthers star center Olli Jokinen after the game. "Vocoun just flat out stood on his head and played the game of his life against us." This wraps up the Panthers home stand for block 3 as they win two games and drop three heartbreaking losses to the Penguins, Blues and Predators. Each home game during block 3 was decided by one goal. In their wins, the Panthers defeated the visiting Flames and Canadiens. "This was a rough block for us," said head coach Jacques Martin. "Hopefully we can turn the tide in block 4 and get some more breaks to go our way."

Florida Panthers Defeat Visiting Montreal Canadiens 5-4
The Panthers got out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period but Montreal kept coming back until the last minute to make it a very good game. Penalties were a big problem for the Habs as they spent 23 minutes in the box giving the Panthers 3 big power play chances. While Florida only capitalized on one of those three power play chances it was enough in the end to get the two points. Greg Campbell opened the scoring at the nine minute mark of the first period. Jay Bouwmeester and David Booth assisted on the opening goal. Thirty seconds later Ladislav Smid scored his second goal of the season off another great pass by Bouwmeester. Kyle Calder also added an assist on the goal. Less than five minutes later Nathan Horton put one past the Canadiens goalie to make it 3-0. Zach Parise scored later in the first period for the Habs to make it a 3-1 game after one period. Nearly midway through the second period Pavol Demitra scored another goal for Montreal to make it a 3-2 game. A couple minutes later David Booth got his first professional goal making the score 4-2 in favor of the home team. Once again Calder and Bouwmeester added an assist. Not willing to go away and playing aggressively being short-handed, Saku Koivu added a goal on the penalty kill to make it a 4-3 game. Less than a minute later, however, Olli Jokinen found a hole and buried the puck in the back of the net on the same power play to make it 5-3 Panthers. Late in the third period, after a fight between Ladislav Smid and Alexei Kovalev, Daniel Sedin scored an unassisted goal to bring the Canadiens to within a goal. It was too little too late however for the Habs and the Florida Panthers secured the win.

Blues Steal One in South Florida
Once again the power play kills the Panthers. With 20 minutes in penalties the Panthers found themselves back on their heels most of the game. St. Louis took advantage scoring twice with the man advantage. Jan Bullis scored on a power play 12 minutes into the first period to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Matt Cullen evened the game 1-1 scoring on a power play in the second period. Stephen Weiss gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead less than a minute and a half later scoring on a pass from Anders Eriksson and Mike Van Ryn. St. Louis evened the game again late in the second period as Duncan Keith scored his first goal of the season. Early in the third period Olli Jokinen scored his ninth goal of the year to give the Panthers the lead once again 3-2. From this point it was all St. Louis as less than a minute later Fredrik Modin scored to even the game. Then on a power play Duncan Keith sweaked one passed Roberto Luongo to make it 4-3 Blues. That would be all the scoring in the game and enough for the visiting St. Louis Blues to take the contest. "We were absolutely pathetic out there tonight," said Panthers head coach Jacques Martin after the game. "It's awefully hard to win games when you spend that much time in the box." On the night the Blues were 2-6 on the power play while the Panthers had seven opportunities with the advantage they were only able to capitalize once and blew the game to an ever improving St. Louis team.

Penalty Kill Weakens, but Panthers Prevail Against Flames
Olli Jokinen had a pair of assists and Kristian Huselius scored once and added an assist as the Florida Panthers downed the visiting Calgary Flames 3-2. Florida had a difficult time killing penalties and the Flames capitalized on that weakness scoring both of their goals on the power play. The Panthers for their part took the puck deep into the Calgary zone often and recorded 35 shots on goal. Jay Bouwmeester scored early in the first period off a pass from Olli Jokinen and Kristian Huselius to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later Eric Staal scored on the power play for Calgary to even the score at 1-1. Later in the first, Huselius scored his 13th goal of the season to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Stephen Weiss added an insurance goal early in the second period to give Florida a 3-1 lead. That lead held until halfway through the third period when, on another power play, Dustin Penner scored for the Flames to make it a 3-2 game. Calgary yanked the goalie with about 55 seconds to go in the contest but the extra attacker just wasn't enough to even the contest and send it to overtime. "It was a good win for us," said Panthers head coach Jacques Martin. "Coming off the loss Tuesday to Pittsburgh here we thought we might have a rough patch to get through. It seems like goals have been harder to come by recently. We did give up the two power play goals tonight, but we scored three even handers and came out on top."

Buffalo 5 Columbus 3
Before the game of Columbus at Buffalo they had a little ceremony to acknowledge Mike Modano becoming the highest scoring American hockey player. Phil Housley said some words, "Congratulations Mike for the record and all your hard work has paid off. Now I have two things to be envious of you for. You have broken my record and of course I have always been jealous of your cool haircut."
Modano chuckled at the joke about his appearance but had no comment and accepted the puck graciously.
Then the Sabres' Housley gave Modano a little puck to mark the record. It was game time and the Bluejackets jumped off to a 2-0 lead. The Sabres registered zero GR;s in the first period. In the second period they got some and scored three times to take over the lead. But CLM's Bobby Holik tied it up with his 4th goal on the year. Fleury Stands on Head - Beats Panthers in South Florida
I don't think that head coach Jacque Martin has ever been so frustrated in his entire coaching career as he was throughout this game. There was a ton of back and forth play and Marc-Andre Fleury was a stone-cold brick wall stopping 42 of the Panthers 43 shots on goal. "Every time we had a chance, and we had plenty, there was Fleury making another terrific save," Martin said. "He definitely got the better of us tonight, but wait til the next time we meet." Kristian Huselius opened the scoring late in the first period with a goal off a faceoff won by Olli Jokinen at 16:54. That would be the only time Florida would beat the Penguins goaltender during the game. Evgeni Malkin evened the contest on a power play goal early in the second period. Later in the second, Boyd Devereaux scored the games final goal beating a handcuffed Roberto Luongo. The Panthers dropped just their second game at the Bank Atlantic Center this season, while the Penguins have played well on the road winning 5 of 10 contests away from the Igloo and gaining a point in one overtime loss on the road as well. "They came to play," said Panthers Defenseman Mike Van Ryn after the game. "Syd was especially difficult to contain, but we did a pretty good job on him. The rest of their team just put in that much more of an effort to beat us." Florida still leads the South Division by six points over the Nashville Predators but with some important games coming up the Panthers must play well to keep their lead in the division.
