UP NEXT FOR THE FLYERS

The Boston Bruins Skate In To Town Tonight

Philadelphia,PA- Depending on whether or not the team bus (league file) arrives tonight, the Flyers will open up the Block 6 Homestand against the Bruins at the Wachovia Center. The Bruins are making their first trip in to town since the second home game of the season., In that game, the Flyers beat the Bruins 3-2 in a game that was decided in a shoot-out.

The Flyers have a 2 games to 1 season series lead, winning in their first trip to Boston in Block 2, by a score of 4-1. They lost the last meeting, 4-3 in Boston during the last road block. In that game, the Flyers outshot the Bruins 34-27 & Bruin goalie Tim Thomas made a spectacular save in the final seconds stopping Erik Cole on a breakaway.

This is a big conference matchup. The Bruins are tied with Columbus at 55 points & are only 1 point behind the Flyers' 56. In the 3 games, no Bruin has scored multiple goals, they have 7 different goal scorers. Of the Flyers' 9 goals, Erik Cole has scored 3, one in each game, and Slava Kozlov has 2.

The Bruins will be starting Tim Thomas in net. He is 1-1 against the Flyers, losing at the Wachovia Center. He has a 2.40 GA & a .929 Sv%. The Flyers are expected to allow J.S. Giguere to rest is sore groin & plan to go with Antero Niittymaki, who has been playing great at home. Niittymaki was the losing goalie last block at Boston, his only game against the Bruins.

Look for this to be a hard hitting affair, as shown in the photo left.

The Kotalik Kount

Sabre left wing Ales Kotalik (#12) scores on Mikka Kiprasoff early in the season but the goal is disallowed as the referee had inadvertantly blew the whistle. Calgary went on to win the game 4-3.
Ales Kotalik has gone 50 games and has yet to register a goal. He has six assists. The number of games played without a goal scored is called:

FLYERS LOOK FOR IMPROVEMENT

PHILLY NEEDS STRONG GOALTENDING DOWN THE STRETCH

Philadelphia, PA- The Flyers have been struggling the last 2 blocks, coming in at 9-11-0. They bounced back in Block 5 going 6-4-0, from their dismal 3-7-0 Block 4. While doing so, they fell in the Conference Standings where they currently sit in the 5th seed with 56 points (28-22-0) but only 4 points seperate them from 8th seed Tampa Bay, and 8 points from the 9th place Pittsburgh Penguins. But looking at teams above them, The Flyers trail 4th place Nashville by 2 points & 3rd place New Jersey by 3.

If the Flyers are going to rise up & seperate themselves from the lower half, they are going to need strong goaltending, in particular, back up goaltending from Antero Niittymaki (pictured). J.S. Giguere is being plagued by a groin injury and team doctors have told management that he must limit himself to only 23 more games, which means Niittymaki will be starting at least 9 games.

Niittymaki has been playing a bit better of late, but most likely he will get the most of his work at home where he is 5-2-0, 2.69 GA & .906 SV% with 2 shutouts. On the road he is a completely different goalie, 2-9-0, 4.48 GA & .864 SV%.

Giguere has been in the top 10 in many goalie categories this season such as wins (21) GAA (2.49) & SV% (.915). On the road, his 8-6-0 record is ok, but his stats are good. In 14 games, he has given up 5 goals once, and 4 goals 5 times, keeping the opposition under 4 goals 8 times, so he keeps his team in the game. Overall on the road he has a 2.77 GAA & .908 SV%.

So, look for Nitty to wear his black jersey more than the white one down the stretch.

HBL Player Spotlight Thomas Vanek

Thomas Vanek scored his 5oth goal of the season versus the Vancouver Canucks in the 48th game.

HBLNews catches up with Buffalo Sabres Left Wing Thomas Vanek for an exclusive one on one interview.

HBLNews: You have scored 50 goals in 48 games, please comment on that.

Vanek: It's pretty good. I like playing on a line with Derrek [Roy] and Jean Pierre [Dumont] and sometimes Drew [Stafford], occasionally Drury is OK too. What do you want me to say? It really comes from being on a good team that has good chemistry.

HBLNews: You have just 18 assists That's 130th in the league.

Vanek: Is that a question? Is this an interview or do you just like to hear yourself talk?

HBLNews: You have only 18 assists and 129 players have more than you. Would you comment on that?

Vanek: Assists are all right and all but I like to get goals more. I leave assists to my teammates. They enjoy them, so in that way I'm giving.

HBLNews: How about the pace you're on do you think you can keep it up?

Vanek: Well, I've played every game thus far and I'm not even tired. I really think I can play 82 games this season. Hope I can keep it going but it's hard. That's what she said. [laughs]

HBLNews: Thank you for the interview. How do you feel?

Vanek: I feel like a hundred dollars. You're welcome.

Ottawa Defeats Florida In Shootout

The Senators came out kicking ass and taking names but the Florida captain Olli Jokinen had other ideas and almost single handedly led his team back to nearly pull out the victory at home against a tough opponent.

The Senators scored the first three goals before the Panthers came back with two of their own to make it 3-2 at the end of one period.

After a scoreless second period, the Panthers evened up the game on a Kyle Calder goal. Mikael Samuelsson scored against his old team to give his new team a 4-3 lead in the middle of the third period. Less than two minutes later Olli Jokinen scored his third goal of the game to even the contest once again.

The score stayed 4-4 through overtime and the game ended 5-4 after the Senators out scored the Panthers 3-2 in a shootout.

"They just had too much for us tonight, but we almost pulled it out," said Florida Coach Jacques Martin after the game. "Some day we'll figure out how to be those guys."

Panthers Down Blue Jackets

In a game that was much closer than the final score the Florida Panthers defeated the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets by a final score of 8-2. The Panthers poured it on in the final 15 minutes of the game scoring five goals including a third period hat trick by Kristian Huselius. Going into the third period the Panthers held a close lead 3-2 but with the help of two big power plays, Florida handled the Blue Jackets in the final period.

It was a game of streaks as for the first period the Panthers took the play to the Columbus end scoring 3 times in the first 20 minutes. In the second period the Blue Jackets came back a bit as they scored twice and shut down the Florida offense, although the Panthers still out shot Columbus 14-10 in the second. The third period was all Florida as they doubled the Blue Jackets in shots 17-8 and scored five times to put this game to bed.

Roberto Luongo played well allowing two goals, one on a four on three power play, while stopping 22 shots. Huselius and Olli Jokinen each notched four points and Matt Cullen added a goal and an assist for the Panthers. Florida has played well of late and are currently leading the South Division by five points over the Nashville Predators.

Panthers Defeat Visiting Sabres

In a terrific game, and my first net-play experience in SOM Hockey, the Sabres came to Miami and played a great game against the hometown Panthers. With very good goalie play on both sides the Panthers emerged in the end with a 3-2 victory.

Panthers Down Visiting Flyers 4-1

Roberto Luongo was as solid as he's been all season and the Panthers got two power play goals as Florida defeats the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 at the Bank Atlantic Center. Luongo stopped 40 shots to earn the victory in net for the Panthers, while Giguere stopped 32 of the 36 shots he faced. Luongo's performance earned him top star for the game.

While Olli Jokinen was not selected as a star of the game he did help his team by scoring the Panthers first power play goal of the night and assisting on the other power play goal by Kristian Huselius. Jokinen's goal was his 20th of the season and Huselius scored his 21st. Also scoring for the Panthers were Matt Cullen, his 15th, and Juraj Kolnik, his 5th goal.

The Panthers were 2-4 with the man advantage while the Flyers couldn't capitalize on their four power play chances. Even though the Philly squad out shot their counterparts, the Panthers come away with the victory and jump back ahead of the surging Predators for the lead in the South Division and are only seven points behind the Buffalo Sabres who have led the SouthEast Conference most of the season.

Sabres Win Streak At 5

@

Lightning. It was all scoreless until very late in the 2nd period when Drury scored his 16th goal. The Lightning were very aggresive and delivered 15 hits. Alexander Semin scored late in the 3rd to wrap it up for a 2-0 win for the Sabres and it was Miller time as he recorded his 2nd shutout.

Rangers. Buffalo had an amazing 21-3 shot advantage after one period and a two goal lead. New York fought back to make the final shots on goal close but the sharp shooters got 3 goals past Lundqvist on 6 shots in the final period and went on to win 5-2. Alexi Zhitnik has a three point night and his first number one star of the game this season.

Blue Jackets. It was a consistent effort by the Sabres as they scored in all periods and tested P.Leclaire all game. The Jackets, Bobby Holik scored his ninth goal of the year to prevent a shutout. Buffalo took advantage of six powerplays and scored with Semin (19) and Vanek (47)Sabres 4 Blue Jackets 1

Canucks. Vancouver's T.Pyatt (8) got on the board first. In the 2nd period it was 4 goals on 20 Sabres shots tuckering out J.Graham. In the 3rd period Buffalo added two more power play goals to go 4 for 7 on the advantage and they went on to win it 6-1 behind J.P.Dumont's fourth multi goal game of the year. B.Witt with 3 hits and 2 takeaways was the man for the Canucks.

Predators. Predator's goalie C.Mason was impressive with 36 saves and bordering on brilliant with 11 of 12 on the GR. Keeping his team in it long enough for them to stage a 3rd period come back tie it at 3-3 and to send it to overtime with goals from Walker (16) and Smyth (26). But then in the shootout Mason's brick wall fell down as he gave up 3 goals in the shootout as the Sabres nabbed the win.

FLYERS START BLK 5 QUICK

Beat Panthers 4-2 In Block 5 Opener

Philadelphia- In the past few practices, coach Keith Jones stressed that the Flyers needed to get off to a fast start each game. So, if today's start is any indication, this could be a fun block.

Against the Panthers today, Jeff Carter won the opening faceoff, & and the Flyers turned it up ice for a breakaway. Michal Rozsival burried the puck past Roberto Luongo for his 2nd of the season just 26 seconds in. But, at the end of the shift, Carter took a penalty & Nathan Horton tied it up at 3:00. Mike Richards was doing a great job killing the penalty, but instead of skating it out of the zone to finish it off he shot the puck out of the zone, but Horton was able to get a shot off from the point that beat J.S. Giguere. Dennis Seidenberg scored his first of the year at 10:13, but the lead was gone at the 17:00 mark when Matt Cullen tied it up.

The Flyers out shot the Panthers 18-9 in the first, but Jones was not 100% happy. "We let them hang around. We had a great chance to blow it open in the first, but I gotta give credit to Luongo there."

In the 3rd, Simon Gagne scored his 18th of the year at 6:10 & then added a power play goal to ice it at 17:37. His 2 goals & an assist earned him the star of the game.

Jones was also happy with the defensive effort the team showed which was something they lacked in block 4 which saw them go 3-7-0, dropping them down to 3rd in the division & 6th in the conference. "Our guys took the body well." Jones said "And our defensemen did a great job standing up at the blueline." The Flyers had 16 takeaways to the Panthers' 9. Marc-Andre Bergeron & Kim Johnsson each had 3 to lead the way. In all, 6 Flyers had multiple takeaways.

The win now brings them to a point behind New Jersey for 2nd place, but the Devils have a game in hand. The Flyers host NJ for their next home game.
