FLYERS ACQUIRE COMMODORE

Commodore says he is looking forward to "hanging on the beach & surfin' with team Pres/GM Santos"

Deadline Deal Sends Johnsson To Habs

Philadelphia,PA- Prior to the trade deadline, GM/Pres Jack Santos was approached by the league's most active GM, Montreal's Dave Paddington, who was looking to strengthen his Left side of the blueline. A short while later, fan favorite LD Kim Johnsson was dealt for RD Mike Commodore & prospect RW Jeremy Colliton.

Johnsson was having a good year & has always been a favorite of the GM's, but was atrracted by the offer of Commodore. The GM said "Kim has always been a good solid player who logs a lot of ice time, but Mike was my main target in the off season. I would not have had to make this deal had I dug deeper into my pocket last summer." The deal was made basically because Danny Markov will most likely walk away after the year, weakening the right side. But the Flyers have Braydon Coburn & Lasse Kukkonen coming into their own now & both can play both sides of the line.

The Flyers get younger, Johnsson will be 32 next month & Commodore will be 29 in November. This season, Johnsson, solid D-4 man, has 2G & 22A in 54 games, both goals are on the PP. He leads the Flyers in Avg TOI, loggin in an average of 26:38 a game. He also leads the Flyers in Takeaway percentage, 85%. The one negative stat: the worst +/- on the team, he is a -13 & the only player on the team in minus double digits.

Commodore is coming as a solid D-4 man as well, and has 3G & 15A in 60 games, with 1PPG & 1SHG. He is more intimidating than Johnsson & has just as good a Takeaway percentage. Commodore has basically been playing as a 3rd line D-man in Montreal's srtong side behind Seabrook & Komisarek, logging in 13:48 in TOI per game.

Colliton will report to the minors as he has Junior status & is ineligible for play. "We are not quite sure where he fits in just yet. We are monitoring his Junior play at Bridgeport and will make a decision in the summer." Santos said of Colliton.

Commodore will be arriving in South Philly later today & will be participating in the teams practice as Coach Keith Jones prepares for the season's 7th block.

Panthers Lose to Visiting Nashville

There was little to cheer for after Niklas Hagman's first period goal for the Panthers. Nashville scored three times in the first period after Florida took an early lead. The Predators added one more for good measure in the second period and there the score remained 4-1 until the end.

Despite the fact that Florida out shot the visiting team 34-29 for the game and 17-5 in the second period it was all Nashville nearly all night. Chris Mason stood on his blinking head and stopped 33 of 34 shots that he faced. The few power play chances that Florida got were exercises in futility as the Predators stuffed every chance at getting the puck deep into the Nashville zone.

Four different players scored for the Predators (Hartnell, Williams, Walker, and Legwand). Hagman had the lone goal for the Panthers. After his poor first period, Roberto Luongo played well stopping 25 of 26 shots in the final two periods. The Panthers big line of Jokinen, Huselius and Horton were shut down all night by a tough Nashville defense.

HEATLEY, NIITTYMAKI LEAD FLYERS IN BLOCK 6

Flyers go 6-3-1 To Stay In The Thick Of It

Philadelphia,PA- Dany Heatley scored 15 points (8g & 7a) to lead the offense & Antero Niittymaki won all 3 of his games to lead the Flyers to a 6-3-1 record, leaving them 3rd in the Southeast Conference at press time.

Flyers coach Keith Jones was not happy with the home effort (3-2-0) stating that they could easily have gone 0-5 because all 3 wins came in either OT or a Shootout. But then the Flyers went on the road and took 7 out of 10 points. In doing so they out scored the home teams 20-16, but you can subtract one due to the shootout loss in Pittsburgh.

The most impressive win of the block was in Buffalo. Jeff Carter scored 2 goals and added a helper in leading the Flyers to a 7-3 victory.

Niittymaki took the crease in 2 home games & 1 road game. At home, he beat the Bruins & the Maple Leafs, whom he also beat on the road. In the 3 games, he gave up 7goals on 94 shots for a .926 save percentage & a 2.23 GAA and 13-18 in GRs. Jones said he may go to Nitty 4 or 5 times in the next 10 game stretch. "I have to rest Giguere for at least 6 games, so why not go with Nitty now while he's hot?"

Panthers Come From Behind to Beat Visiting Lightning

The Florida Panthers got two goals from Kristian Huselius and goals from Brendan Morrow, Matt Cullen and Olli Jokinen to lift them past visiting Tampa Bay. Roberto Luongo only faced 16 shots and stopped 14 of them.

The Lightning scored twice in the first period to take an early lead despite being out shot 9-6 in the first period. The second period saw a major offensive blast by the Florida team as they out shot the Lightning 19-2 and scored two goals to even the game after two periods 2-2.

The third period was a continuation of the onslaught against the Tampa Bay goalie as the Panthers peppered the net with 18 shots. Florida out-shot Tampa Bay 46-16 for the game.
The tie was broken up by Matt Cullen who stole the puck and rushed the length of the ice to score unassisted. Kristian Huselius scored 7 minutes later to give the Panthers a commanding 4-2 lead. Olli Jokinen scored a short time later to finish off the scoring and give the Panthers a 5-2 win.
