Habs Stone Panthers 2-0

After the Panthers offensive onslaught of the visiting Flames, the Montreal Canadiens come to town and shutout Florida 2-0. Montreal got a goal in the second period and the third period to claim the victory. The Panthers couldn't get anything going on offense despite putting 30 shots on goal not many of them were quality chances.

Martin Gerber was perfect in net for the Habs, stopping all 30 shots he faced. Roberto Luongo was not bad for the Panthers as he stopped 36 of 38 shots against including 7 of 8 GRs.

The first period was a scoreless affair that saw the Canadiens outshoot the Panthers 13-8. Each team had a couple of quality scoring chances but neither team capitalized on their opportunities.

Montreal got on the scoreboard in the second period at the 10:02 mark on a goal by Andrei Kostitsyn, his 24th of the season. The Panthers outshot the Habs 10-8 in the second period but again neither team had very many quality scoring chances.

Erik Cole put the game out of reach at the 18:48 mark of the third period by scoring his 8th goal of the year. The goal gave Montreal a 2-0 victory on the road.

Panthers Demoralize Visiting Flames 8-0

The Florida Panthers had an easy time defeating the visiting Calgary Flames. Roberto Luongo recorded his fourth shutout of the season and is second only to Mikka Kiprusoff who has five shutouts this year. The Panthers managed to scored eight goals, three by Niklas Hagman, two by Olli Jokinen, and one each by Nate Horton, Jay Bouwmeester, and Kristian Huselius.

There was no scoring in the first period and all of the breaks and chances in the first 15 minutes went Calgary's way. Through the first 15 minutes, Calgary outshot Florida 13-0. For the period the Flames outshot the Panthers 16-3.

The scoring opened early in the second period when Niklas Hagman scored the first of his three goals on a one time pass from Kristian Huselius. Hagman scored his second in quick order 24 seconds later on a breakaway pass from Huselius. The Panthers outshot Calgary 11-10 in the second period.

Very early in the third period, Olli Jokinen scored twice in a three minute span, once on the power play to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead. Ninety seconds later, Nate Horton scored a goal on a pass across the crease from Lukas Krajicek to give Florida a 5-0 lead.

At the 11:02 mark of the third period Hagman scored his third to capture the hat trick. This time on the power play he scored on a quick pass from Brenden Morrow. Jay Bouwmeester scored at the 12:54 mark to give Florida a 7-0 lead. The lead was added to again with less than a minute to play when Kristian Huselius scored to make the final score 8-0.

The Panthers were 2-4 on the powerplay while the Flames were 0-4. Roberto Luongo stopped all 30 shots he faced and was named first star of the game. Niklas Hagman's hat trick earned him the second star of the game, and Kristian Huselius' goal and two assists earned him the third star of the game.

Sabres Half Way Update

It's halfway thru the season with the Sabres having played 40 games and the Sabres are leading the division with a 32-8-0 record. The team catagories that they lead in are the highest scoring team and lowest goals allowed, they have taken the fewest penalties and have the most defensive takeaways.

Individual league leaders are the two newest acquisitions Thomas Kaberle with best +/- (28) and most defensive takeaways (69) and Nikolai Khabibulin with the lowest GAA at 1.73 and save % at .939. He is also undefeated at 13-0 record.

Other individual team stars to the 40 game mark have been Thomas Vanek with 25 goals and 14 PPG. Derek Roy with 21 G 33 A for 54 points. Brian Campbell with 49 assists. Brad Lukowich 36 hits at 84%. Chris Drury 233 faceoff wins 63%.

Panthers Narrowly Defeat Visiting Sharks

Thanks to a terrific job of goaltending by Florida goalie Roberto Luongo, the Panthers held off a late surge by the San Jose Sharks to get the 2-1 victory. Both goalies were impressive. Luongo stopped 29 of 30 shots against him. He stopped five of six GRs. Evgeni Nabokov, the San Jose goalie, stopped 24 of 26 shots including five of seven GRs. For the game the Sharks were 0-4 on the powerplay, while the Panthers managed to score once in three powerplay chances.

The scoring began with an unassisted goal by Kamil Kreps at the 4:21 mark of the first period. It was Kreps' fourth goal of the season. Just over three minutes later, with Florida on their first power play of the game, Brenden Morrow scored his 18th goal of the season to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. The Panthers outshot the Sharks in the first period 11-8.

The second period was a real back and forth defensive struggle that saw no scoring and very few chances for either team. San Jose outshot Florida 8-7 in the second period. There were eight minor penalties in the second period.

The third period began much the same way the second period ended, with few scoring chances and no scoring until the 8:57 mark. Patrick Marleau got a breakaway pass from Marco Sturm and buried the puck behind the Panther goaltender to make it a one goal game. The final 10 minutes of the game saw the Sharks bringing it hard to the Panthers zone but two minor penalties slowed down the San Jose attack.

In the final minute, the Sharks pulled Nabokov from the net and attacked with six skaters to no avail. Luongo and the Panthers held off the attack to get the 2-1 win. Roberto Luongo was named first star of the game. For some reason Sturm was named second star of the game for his single assist on the Marleau goal. Kamil Kreps, who opened the scoring in the first period was named third star of the game.

Panthers Down Visiting Maple Leafs

The Florida Panthers defeated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs by a score of 5 to 3. The Panthers were 2-7 on the power play while the Leafs were 0-3. The Leafs did score a late short-handed goal but time ran out on their attempted comeback.

The first period was scoreless and rather uneventful as the Panthers outshot the Leafs 10-8. There were two minor penalties in the first period, one by Sheldon Souray, and the other by Anton Stralman.

The first goal of the game came when Valtteri Filppula scored his 6th goal of the season to give the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at the 4:29 mark of the second period. Four minutes later Olli Jokinen tied the game with his 20th goal of the season. The Panthers dominated the rest of the period outshooting Toronto 19-5, but the score remained tied at 1-1.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead on a Niklas Hagman goal five minutes into the third period. Kristian Huselius and Boyd Gordon assisted on Hagman's 14th goal of the year. Less than 90 seconds later, with the Panthers on a power play, Brenden Morrow scored his 16th goal of the season to increase the Florida lead to 3-1. Shortly after the Morrow goal, Maxim Afinogenov scored his 8th of the season for Toronto to cut the lead to 3-2.

Later in the period, with the Panthers once again on a power play, Niklas Hagman scored his second goal of the game to give Florida a two goal lead once again. Olli Jokinen added another goal, his second of the game, to increase the Panthers lead to 5-2. Late in the third period Alexander Steen added a short-handed goal to make the final score 5-3.

Peter Budaj was not perfect in net for the Panthers but got the win stopping 18 of 21 shots. Toronto goalie Ryan Miller stopped 34 of 39 shots against earning the loss for the game.

FLYERS PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Goalie Giguere Makes The Tough Saves Look Easy

Philadelphia,PA- J.S. Giguere had worked extra hard this past offseason in an attempt to improve on last season. Although not a bad year, he thought, as did Flyer management, that he could have performed better.

Last season in the HBMHL, he played 56 games & posted a 2.62 GAA (NHL-2,26) while stopping .916 (NHL-.918) percent of the shots he faced. On Tough Saves (GRs), he stopped 73.4% (270/368). There were 22 goalies who face over 250 GRs, he placed tied for 5th, but the leader, Roberto Luongo, was only 5 percentage points higher at 78.9% (341/432). This season, the Tough Saves have been the difference in his game. There are 19 goalies who have faced over 100, Giguere is 8th facing 139, but has stopped 117 for a 84.2% rate. Ottawa's Christobal Huet is 2nd in that group at 81.0% (94/116). The next closest is Boston's Tim Thomas' 76.5% (88/115).

This week in practice, Giguere was seen working with Goalie Coach Bernie Parent & Antero Niittymaki, with Nitty getting most of the time in the crease. It looked like J.S. & Bernie were schooling Nitty, perhaps to help him improve on his Tough Save stats, a rancid 56.0% (28/50).

To compare the importance, look at these numbers: 22 out of the 24 goals Nitty has given up were GRs. Meaning, only 2 goals have come off of opponent's cards. While Giguere has given up 22 out of 49 goals on the GR, 27 goals off of opponent's cards. Giguere has played 23 games to Nitty's 7, but Nitty is going to have to see more time in the coming blocks, the Flyers need him to improve on his own accountability.

Visiting Senators Drop Panthers in OT

Each team had quite a few chances in the first period. The Ottawa Senators opened up the scoring in the first period with a goal by Erik Christensen, his first of the season. Boyd Gordon tied up the game with a shorthanded goal late in the first period. Ottawa outshot Florida 17-14 in the first period.

Nate Horton gave the Panthers a one goal lead in the first minute of the second period with his ninth goal of the year. Olli Jokinen scored his 17th of the season to increase the Florida lead to 3-1. Jokinen's goal came on a power play and was assisted by Sheldon Souray and Jay Bouwmeester. Just a couple minutes later, Daniel Alfredsson scored the first of three consecutive goals, this one on a shorthanded chance. Later in the second period Alfredsson scored on a power play to tie the game 3-3. The Panthers outshot Ottawa 9-8 in the second period.

The third period offered more chances for the Panthers but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities and the scored remained tied going into the overtime four on four skate. Florida outshot Ottawa 9-6 in the third period.

The game came to an abrupt end as Alfredsson completed the hat trick giving the Sens the extra point in the standing. It was the first Florida overtime loss at home this season but the extra point helps to propel the Panthers in the standings.

For the game Florida was outshot 34-32. Patrick Lalime stopped 29 of 32 shots in goal for Ottawa and Roberto Luongo stopped 30 of 34 shots for Florida. Florida managed only one power play goal in six chances while Ottawa scored once on the power play in two chances.

Alfredsson was the first star of the game with his hat trick. Nate Horton was second star of the game and Erik Christensen was the third star. Neither goalie was spectacular though each made some great saves in the third period.

Panthers Defeat Visiting Blue Jackets

For the second game in a row, the visiting team opened up with a 2-0 lead over the home town Florida Panthers. And for the second game in a row, the Panthers come from behind to take a 4-3 win in the end.

The scoring opened for Columbus on a goal by Rick Nash just 26 seconds into the game. Shortly after that first goal, Olli Jokinen took a double minor for roughing and Jaroslav Spacek made the Panthers pay for the penalty. Spacek scored on the powerplay giving the Blue Jackets a two goal lead early.

Later in the first period, Stephen Weiss scored his third goal of the season to cut the lead in half. Then six minutes later David Booth tied up the score with his sixth goal of the season. Columbus outshot Florida 15-8 in the first period.

Early in the second period, Niklas Hagman gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead with his 12th goal of the year. Several penalties were called in the second period but none of the ensuing power plays led to any goal scoring. The Panthers outshot the Blue Jackets 12-9 in the second period.

Early in the third period Dan Fritsche scored for Columbus to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the third period, Rick Nash took a bad penalty for the Jackets and Florida took advantage with Nathan Horton scoring his eighth goal of the year on the power play. Florida was outshot in the third period 13-11.

For the game, Florida goalie Roberto Luongo stopped 34 of 37 shots and was 2 for 3 on GRs. Columbus goalie Pascal Leclaire stopped 27 of 31 shots he faced and was only 1 for 3 on GRs. The Jackets scored one power play goal in five chances while Florida scored once on three chances.

Panthers Defeat Visiting Penguins

Making up for the last game, the Panthers opened up some big offense and took advantage of a tired Penguins goalie putting up nine goals and defeating the visiting Pittsburgh team 9-4. This was an old fashion end to end shootout. A total of 74 shots were taken by both teams and the goalies were not really any kind of factor in this one.

The scoring started early in the first period with Pittsburgh on the powerplay. Evgeni Malkin scored to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Twelve minutes later, Darcy Tucker increased the lead to 2-0 when he scored on a pass from Matt Bradley. Florida went on a power play and at the 14:18 mark of the first period, Olli Jokinen scored to cut the lead in half. The Panthers outshot the Penguins 14-13 in the first period.

Less than a minute into the second period, with the Panthers on another powerplay, Jay Bouwmeester scored his ninth goal of the season to even the score 2-2. One minute later, Niklas Hagman scored to give Florida their first lead of the night. At the 8:32 mark of the second period, Pittsburgh got a much needed shorthanded goal from Martin St. Louis to even the contest once again. Florida scored three unanswered goals to close out the second period. Goals by Nate Horton, Brenden Morrow and Stephen Weiss increased the Panthers lead to 6-3.

Halfway through the third period Kristian Huselius scored making it a 7-3 game and Olli Jokinen made it 8-3 two minutes later on a power play goal, Florida's third goal with the man advantage of the night. Brenden Morrow got his second goal of the game at the 14:10 mark of the third period to give the Panthers an incredible 9-3 lead. With just under 90 seconds to play, Ryan Malone scored once more for the Penguins to end the scoring.

For the game the Panthers were 3 of 6 on the powerplay while Pittsburgh managed one goal on five chances with the man advantage. Ray Emery allowed all nine goals stopping only 27 of 36 shots against him. Roberto Luongo was only slightly better allowing a total of four goals on 38 Pittsburgh shots.

Brenden Morrow was named first star for his two goals and three assists. Olli Jokinen had two goals and two assists and was named second star of the game. Sheldon Souray recorded four assists and was named third star for the game.
