FLYERS GET SURPRISE GUEST AT 1st ANNUAL BEACH PARTY

CHAIRMAN SNIDER BRINGS IN JACK'S FAVORITE
Atlantic City, NJ- The Flyers hosted their first annual "End of Summer-Get Ready For Camp" Beach Party this past Sunday. Chairman Ed Snider surprised Pres/GM Santos by bringing in his favorite crooner, Mr. Jimmy Buffett. The show, Santos said, was somewhere between the 80th & 90th time he has seen Mr. Buffett.
No matter how many Landsharks were had, Montreal GM Dave Paddington was unsuccessful in getting Santos to deal Dany Heatley & Patrick Sharpe in the same package.

Here are a few photo's of day's & evening's events:

Buffalo Award Banquet

From the files of Yes it can happen. Buffalo celebrates a sports championship. They win the big game.
The 2007 Champion Buffalo Sabres had their awards banquet at old country buffet and celebrated by giving out their team trophies.
The team led in team points with 122 and Goals scored with 343. Goals against was 218 for 7th in the league. Power play goals 94 (1st) The team was 2nd in most power play chances and also 2nd in fewest times short handed. All these things in combination lead to the Stanley Cup championship.

Individual standouts were Brian Campbell as Top Defenseman. He lead the league in Defensive Takeaways with 104 and was 29th in assists with 57. He was the 2nd highest rated defenseman in the league in plus/minus with +37 only being outdone by teammate Dmitri Kalinin with +42. In the playoffs Campbell led in Defenive Takeaways as well by 3 over his teammate Petteri Nummelin then their was a wide margin after that.

Staying on the plus/minus train of thought. The league leader was Jason Pominville with +50. He was followed by his linemates Chris Drury +46, Alexander Semin +42 and the aforementioned DMen Kalinin +42 and Campbell +37. The Sabres took the Top Five spots in this catagory.

The rookie of the year for the Sabres was a one horse race with Drew Stafford playing 40 regular season games with 7 goals and 14 assists. But the real good numbers came in the post season where young Stafford played 25 games and exploded with 11 goals and 8 assists. In the two playoff series that went to game 7, Stafford scored the game winning goal each time, so he scored in clutch situations. He finished 7th in playoff goals and 14th in playoff points.

In goal both Martin Biron and Ryan Miller had a 2.63 goals against average but Ryan Miller had a league high in wins (46) and shutouts (6) while playing in just 62 games. His record of 46-16 was the best in the HBL. He was the number one star of the game 13 times during the season. In the post season Miller was 16-7 with 2.66 GAA and raised his Goalie Rating save percentage almost 4 percent over the regualar season. 69.7% to 73.4%

An award to the most over achieving player. Comparing his NHL stats to his HBL stats. It goes to J.P. Dumont with 66 NHL points and 97 HBL points a +31. "It help I pass to Vanek many time." said J.P. during his speech. In the playoffs Dumont was the leagues top point scorer with 36 points (11 goals, 25 assists).

The rest of the hardware was given to team MVP Thomas Vanek. In only his second season in the HBL Vanek was the most outstanding player in the league. He led the league in goals with 77 goals to win the Rocket Richard Trophy. An HBL record. He won the goal scoring title by a margin of 18 goals over the next closest player. Vanek dominated the league in 14 catagories. He was the Star of the game 16 times and had 84 star points. The HBL's offensive player of the year was also excellent on defense where he was ranked 9th in the HBL in Defensive Takeaways by a Forward with 66 takeaways. Thomas had 5 hat tricks (2nd), 17 two goal games (1st) and 22 multi-goal games (1st) He scored a goal in 50 games (1st). When the post season began the Austrian sensation's dominance did not waiver a single bit, in fact he actually got even better in the 25 game championship playoff run he recorded 24 goals and 9 assists. He collected 29 star points.
At the end of the night Vanek had to rent a U-Haul for all that hardware he collected from his most valuable player season

But the best piece was for the whole team to enjoy. The Stanley Cup!

A Pre-Draft Sit Down With Jonsey

Flyers Head Coach Keith Jones Discusses State Of Flyers

Pt. Pleasant, NJ- With the Summer heat keeping the team from skating in their pre-draft mini-camp, we were able to catch up with Flyers head coach Keith Jones, who was obviously disappointed in the lack of ice time, but said at least he can sit on the beach a few extra days. The rink (home computer should be cleared) should re-open on Tuesday, 8/26/08.

We asked Jones to comment on a few items:

1-Last season's 1st round defeat to Nashville:
"As a team we went in kind of cold. The most disturbing thing to me about that series, was going 0-3 at home. That is unacceptable."

2- The free agent signings of Lija & Pothier:
" Huge! We were on the border of being weak defensively going into the off season. We may not have the best d-ratings in the league, but we have 7 solid guys on the line, and Pothier will probably come in & pick up some of the scoring that we lose from Bergeron, although his time will be limited. He should be healthy in the future.

3- The Offense:
"looking at the numbers that these guys can potentially put up, we may not have snipers, but we have depth, something that hurt us last year. We have 9 guys 4-rated on offense and another 2 with 3's."

4- Special Teams:
"I'm really excited to watch our Penalty Killers. Our main forwards will be Ritchie, Carts, Sharpie, McAmmond, and Dowd will pick up some time. All of those guys are 3's. Laich may come in to, he can put the puck in shorthanded. Our Defenseman on the kill will most likely be Rozsival, Coburn, Kukkonen, Lija & Commodore. I believe our power play will be in the top 5-8 of the league. Heatley, Sharp, Richards, Carter, Laich, Recchi can all step it up with the advantage."

5- Simon Gagne
" His off season surgery is really going to limit him. We are not sure yet...do we play him early on & hope he is healthy or will he get hurt? Or...do we rest him up in the beginning of the season, knowing that when he returns,he'll be healthy? I am guessing that resting him will be the way to go."

6- Goaltending:
"One of the best combo's in the league. No doubt. Giguere will be better & Nitty has really conditioned himself in the off season. You will see, he will be more reliable & confident this year."

7- The rest of your afternoon:
"Going back outside to sit with Jack by the pool & forget about hockey...I suspect we will kill off the rest of the LandSharks, throw some seafood on the grill, & listen to Buffett!"

Panthers Win Meaningless Pre-Pre-Season Game

I just got soooooooo excited about hockey over the past week, I couldn't help but play a game and I thought I'd share the results with everyone in the league.

Both goalies, Gerber and Luongo were spectacular in the first two periods and the third was pretty tight too, but eventually going to a shootout someone had to win and the last shot of the game was put into the back of the net by Fredrik Modin to give the meaningless win to the Panthers.

I set up an auto CM for the Ducks and it played pretty well. I'm scared to play them in the real upcoming season because of all the sharp-shooters they seem to have. Just thought this might excite everyone to see a box score floating around...
