Panthers Defeat Visiting Penguins

You would think that if the Panthers were ever to beat the Penguins this season they would need a big game from Kristian Huselius and Olli Jokinen. Well, the Panthers did finally get a win against the Pens, but it wasn't because either Huselius or Jokinen played particularly well. Florida came up with their win because of the unsung fellas that have played hard all year. Eric Brewer had three assists on goals scored by three different players on three different forward lines, and none of the were scored by the number one Huselius, Jokinen Horton line.

Fredrik Modin scored his 24th goal of the season on the power play to tie up the game early in the third period. Stephen Weiss and Brewer added the assists. Then with less than seven minutes left in the game, Juraj Kolnik scored again assisted by Weiss and Brewer, this time an even strength goal.

The final goal, a non factor in the outcome, came with four seconds left on the clock and was scored by Travis Moen again assisted by Brewer.

Roberto Luongo was magnificent stopping 35 of 36 shots on goal. Fleury was no slouch for the Pens as he stopped the first 21 shots against him and 23 of 26 shots for the game.

This was the Panthers first win against the team from Pittsburgh this season in six games. Time will tell who the Panthers will play in the first round of the playoffs, but the fans and probably a few of the players hope it's not this tough Penguins team. They're pretty good from our vantage point.

Panthers Clinch Division with Win Over Lightning

Olli Jokinen has just poured it on over the past month and added two more goals, his 50th and 51st of the season, and an assist on the Jay Bouwmeester goal to help the Florida Panthers win at home against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning and clinch their Division. Florida out shot Tampa Bay 33 to 21 for the game and Peter Budaj was very tough turning away 20 of 21 shots. Budaj was 2 for 2 on GRs while Curtis Sanford stopped 30 of 33 shots for Tampa Bay and was 3 for 5 on GRs.

Florida was 1 for 6 on the power play getting their power play goal mid-way through the third period by Bouwmeester. The Lightning's only goal, scored by Mike Johnson, came on the power play in the second period at the 12:46 mark. Jeff Halpern and Robert Scuderi assisted on the Johnson goal.

Jokinen was first star and Budaj and Horton each were given stars for the game.

Luongo In Top Playoff Form - Panthers Defeat Blue Jackets 3-0

Roberto Luongo recorded his second shutout in a row by blanking the Columbus Blue Jackets and helping the Panthers win 3-0. Luongo stopped all 29 shots that the Columbus squad sent in his direction and now has not allowed a goal in seven consecutive periods at home in the Bank Atlantic Center. He was 5-5 on GRs for the game and has stopped 15 of his last 15 GRs against.

The scoring started in the first period on a goal by Eric Brewer, his seventh of the season, at 10:55. Olli Jokinen scored his 49th of the season later in the first to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. In the third period the Panthers scored on a power play chance. Sheldon Souray scored his 10th goal of the year and was assisted by Olli Jokinen and Kristian Huselius. For the game the Panthers were 1-5 on the power play while the Blue Jackets didn't have any power play opportunities for the game.

Luongo Tough in Net, Panthers Defeat Visiting Devils 1-0

The story of the game was most certainly the goaltending of Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo. The only goal of the game came late in the third period on a rush by the Panthers. Ollie Jokinen beat Brodeur to give Florida a 1-0 lead that would be enough to capture the win. For the game Luongo stopped all 36 shots he faced and was 10 for 10 on GRs. Brodeur stopped 26 of 27 shots against him and was 3-4 on GRs. There were multiple power play opportunities for each team. New Jersey was 0 of 7 on the power play while Florida was 0 for 3. The lone goal came at 14:12 of the third period and was scored by Ollie Jokinen assisted by Jay Bouwmeester and Nathan Horton.

Panthers Defeat Visiting Maple Leafs 4-2

Despite being out shot 29-27 the Florida Panthers got a hat trick from Olli Jokinen and another goal from Stephen Weiss to propel the Cats to a 4-2 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

Florida scored first on a goal by Stephen Weiss assisted by Rostislav Olesz and Ladislav Smid at 12:34 of the first period. Less than sixty seconds later the Leafs tied it up on a Bryan McCabe goal from Stu Barnes and Ed Belfour. Toronto out shot Florida in the first period 11-5.

Olli Jokinen scored the first of his three goals 16 seconds into the second period on a carry over power play from the Anton Babchuk penalty late in the first period. Kristian Huselius and Jay Bouwmeester assisted on the power play goal. Seven minutes later Jokinen found the back of the net again. Huselius picked up his second assist for the game and Eriksson was in on the goal as well. Toronto made it a one goal game at the 11:32 mark of the second on a Karel Rachunek power play goal assisted by Chris Kunitz and Mats Sundin.

With the score at 4-2 in the third period, Olli Jokinen found himself on a breakaway but was tripped up at the last second and a penalty shot was called. Jokinen snuck the puck past Eddie Belfour to give the Panthers a two goal lead once again.

For the game Belfour stopped 23 of 27 shots against him, while Peter Budaj stopped 27 of 29 shots against him. The Panthers were 1 for 7 on power play chances while the Leafs scored once on one power play opportunity.

FLYERS HEAD FOR THE HOME STRETCH

PHILLY NEEDS IMPROVEMENT IN CHASE FOR HOME ICE

Philadelphia, PA- In the last four blocks of the HBMHL, the Flyers have a record of 19-19-2, including a 12-8-0 home record. In that time frame, their best block came in #6, where they went 6-3-1, with a 3-2-0 home record in which all 3 wins needed OT or a shootout. That said, the Flyers need to go back to playing the kind of hockey they played earlier in the year.

WHO'S HOT:

Simon Gagne - 6g, 8a, 14pts in Block 7. A rebound from his worst goal performance for a block (2g in block 6, but 9a).

Jeff Carter - Had his best block of the season, 5-7-12 with 2SHG, & 1GWG.

Dany Heatley - Ever consistant, 6-6-12 for the block, including 4PPG & 2GWG

Michal Rozsival - 3-10-13 in the block. In the last 3 blocks, he has 7G, 23A, 30Pts in 28GP.

Mark Recchi - Also had his best block of the year, 4-6-10, 1PPG.

The line of Gagne-Carter-Heatley scored 18 of the teams 32 goals of the block. Look for them to be split up on home ice for a game or two.

WHO'S NOT:

Jeff O'Neill - In 63 games this season, he only has 4G, 15A, 19PTS. He has not scored in the last 29 games, dating back to game 2 of Block 4. He will be a healthy scratch on the upcoming road trip.

Mike Richards - Had just 1G & 1A in Block 7. He has just 4G's in his last 39 games after scoring 5 in his first 10. Still one of the best PKers on the team.

Patrick Sharp - 10 of his 28 points have been on special teams, 5PP & 5PK. He has not been used on the PP as much, but he is logging close to 17 minutes a game, but he has only been averaging 3 points a block for the past 5 blocks after scoring 13 in the first 2 blocks.

THE QUESTION MARKS:

Mike Commodore - Hasn't really impressed anyone in his first block, but he has only been regulated to 3rd pairing. Has seen some action on special teams. Had just 2 assists in his first 10 games in Philadelphia.

The Goaltending - This will be the key. Look for Giguere to get 10 starts in the final 12 games unless he plays horrible on home ice. He needs to have a block like he did in #3 where he was 6-0. Niittymaki, who has been a much better goalie at home than on the road, is slated for 2 road starts & no home starts. Scheduled for Atlanta & Boston, 2 teams that he has some success against.

HOME ICE OR ROAD WARRIORS?

Currently sitting in the 7th seed.

Pittsburgh is in the 8th spot, trailling the Flyers by 6 points, they play once in Pittsburgh (08/05). The Flyers are 3-1-1 against the Pens.

New Jersey is 1 point ahead of the Flyers. The Devils come in to town for one game (08/03) and have not lost in two games here.

Columbus is 2 points ahead of the Flyers in the 5th spot. Last block they came in & beat the Flyers 6-4. But the Flyers have beaten them twice in Columbus in lopsided games.

Nashville, who is in the last Home Ice spot at #4, comes in on 08/05. They are currently 5 points ahead of the Flyers. Flyers are 2-3-0 against the Preds.

Boston. The Flyers will play them 3 times in the last 12 games. 2 on the road. Flyers trail the 3rd seed Bruins by 8 points. This season, the Flyers are 3-2 against the Bruins. Giguere is 2-0.

The Sabres, who the Flyers play once and can't catch & the Panthers, whom they don't play, are pretty much out of reach.

Other games are at Anaheim (08/01) who have a 1-0 season series lead. At Atlanta (08/02) Flyers lead the series 2-1. At Tampa Bay (08/05), who is still mathematically alive trailing the Pens by 9 points & the Flyers by 17. The Flyers are 3-0 against the Bolts. And Montreal comes in to Philly to get the homestand started on 08/01. Montreal is in the battle for their Conference, but they can also end up in the 7th seed if they have a bad block. The Flyers are 1-0 against the Habs, beating them in Montreal 5-4 on a Mark Recchi goal in the final seconds of OT.

Should be an interesting final run in what has been a fun season.

Panthers Power Play Rocks Lightning

The Panthers scored three power play goals on six chances to take out the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning at Bank Atlantic Center to end block seven. All three of Florida's first line forwards each scored a goal and added at least one assist. Nathan Horton added two assists and Horton and Olli Jokinen each scored on the power play. The Panthers were relentless in the Lightning zone out shooting Tampa Bay 35-15 for the game. Curtis Sanford stopped only 7 of 11 GR chances while Roberto Luongo was beaten twice in two GR chances. For the game, Florida was 3 of 6 on the power play while Tampa Bay scored 1 of 5 power play chances.

Sabres block 7 is lucky

It was a close game all the way thru and then early in the 3rd periord on the power play Alexei Zhitnik (6) broke the 1-1 tie. Midway thru the 3rd Alex Semin scored his 27th and Buffalo went on to win 3-1.

Maybe somebody put something in Jason Bacashihua's waterbottle or maybe he was just angy at how difficult it must be to spell his own autograph. In either case the goalie committed an egregious three penalties in the first 6 minutes of the game. The young goalie did play well

(here he is pictured arguing with the ref) however stopping 9 of 11 GR's but the Sabres Zubrus (11), Semin (28) and Vanek (61) all scored. The Blues J. Mayer uncorked one for his 10th of the season but it was not enough as the Sabres won 3-1.

The Sabres completely and utterly outplayed the Flyers in every facet, takeaways, powerplays, penetrates, even faceoffs. Every facet but one that is, and that catagory was goals scored. The Flyers scored four times from four different players. Bergeron (11), Rechi (11), Heatley (39) and Gagne (25).

The Sabres out shot the Flyers 42-26 and out scoring chanced them by double 14-7. J.S Giguere played a great game by stopping 12 of 14 GR and he got 2nd star. PHI 4 BUF 2

The Sabres came out fast and furious and didn't stop for 60 minutes in essentially what could be described as a hockey perfect game. Buffalo scored two powerplay goals in the first two minutes of the game and then added two more to tucker out Blue Jackets netminder P.Leclaire.
The Sabres would add 4 more goals in the game including team captain

Chris Drury's first hat trick of the year. Drury also achieved his highest points total with five by adding two assists. pictured: As hard as they tried they couldn't touch him. The man was untouchable in this game.
P.Leclaire did his best in the onslaught of 13 goalie ratings. Ryan Miller registered his league high tieing 4th shutout. 8-0

Derek Roy (15) quick as a cat scored in the opening moments then Vanek on the powerplay from Roy ended the scoring in the first period. The second period saw Penguins goaltender M-A Fleury face, you guessed it, af flury of action in front of his net. The Sabres battered away and scored 5 goals in the second period. And saw Derek Roy score his 4th point of the game by assisting on T.Vanek's league leading 65th goal.
The Penguins were able to bust up a shut out try for Miller when S.Mellanby (9) scored from passes by V.Lecavalier and T.Poti.

The Sabres J.Pominville was able to overcome this hair cut and joined the 20 goal club by scoring twice. Below we see Pominville wearing a lid and celebrating his first two goal game of the season. 7-1

Panthers Defeat Visiting Bruins

Olli Jokinen had a pair of goals and Kristian Huselius a pair of assists as the Florida Panthers defeated the visiting Boston Bruins 4-3. Brian Rolston, Glen Murray and Rod Brind'Amour scored for the Bruins while Sheldon Souray and Nate Horton added to Jokinens two goals. Roberto Luongo stopped 21 of 24 shots against him for Florida while Tim Thomas stopped 28 of 32 shots against him. A flurry of penalties gave the two teams a total of 11 power plays. Florida was 2 for 6 with the man advantage while Boston was 2 for 5. Nathan Horton's tie breaking goal in the third period with 7:46 left came on a Boston double minor to Sean O'Donnell. This was a very good game with lots of back and forth.

Panthers Defeat Visiting Predators 4-2

Olli Jokinen started the scoring for Florida on the power play just 3:18 into the first period. It was Jokinen's 39th goal of the season this time assisted by Nathan Horton and Sheldon Souray. Travis Moen added a goal five minutes later to give teh Panthers a 2-0 lead. For Moen it was his 5th goal of the year.

In the first minute of the second period Scott Walker of Nashville made it a 2-1 game scoring his 22nd goal of the season. Zach Parise and Shea Weber assisted on the Walker goal. Gregory Campbell scored his 3rd of the season at the 5:39 mark in the second period to give the Panthers a two goal lead once again. Less than a minute after Campbell's goal, however, David Legwand added a power play goal for the Predators and cutting the Panther's lead once again to one.

With less than a minute to play in the second period Brenden Morrow fed a nice pass to Niklas Hagman who found the back of the net and once again gave Florida a two goal lead for the rest of the game. The third period was largely uneventful with no scoring, but a couple of penalties for Nashville and one for Florida gave each team a few chances on the power play.

For the game, Florida outshot Nashville 35-31. Each team had a power play goal in four chances and there were no significant injuries to report after the game. With this win, Florida is within two points of clinching a playoff spot in the Southeast Conference. They have led the South Division almost the entire season to date.

Panthers Stuffed by Visiting Devils

If it wasn't the ref blowing his whistle and escorting a Panther player to the box of shame, it was Martin Brodeur dishing out the shame as he was a virtual wall. Florida managed only 20 shots and 4 GRs but Brodeur was perfect on GRs and only allowed 2 goals while his offense managed four goals against Roberto Luongo. Luongo experience some bad luck on GRs as he allowed 3 goals on 6 GRs. It was a major part of the game that the Devils scored three power play goals on nine power play chances. While the Panthers scored a power play goal of their own, they only had three chances with the man-advantage. Tough loss for Florida at home.

Panthers Hang On for Shootout Win Over Thrashers

It took overtime and a shootout to finish the job, but the Panthers get it done at home again. With three goals in the first period the Panthers took a commanding lead into the second, only to watch their lead evaporate. At the end of regulation the Thrashers had tied the score to send the game to an extra five minute skate. When the skateoff ended in a tie we went to a shootout.

Ilya Kovalchuk was stoned by Roberto Luongo on the first Thrasher shot. Newly acquired Fredrik Modin then beat Rick DiPietro stickside to give the Panthers a lead. Luongo then stopped Jeremy Roenick who tried to go up high on the big goaltender. Finally, Kristian Huselius gave the Panthers the shootout win when he beat DiPietro with a back handed shot.

For the game the Panthers outshot the Thrashers 32-31 and the Panthers were 2-6 on the powerplay while the Thrashers were 2-3. Nathan Horton, Niklas Hagman and Stephen Weiss each scored for Florida in the first period. Kurtis Foster scored for Atlanta in the second period. Pascal Dupuis scored in the early third period to make it a 3-2 game. Foster then scored with 10 minutes left on a power play for Atlanta to even the score. The Panthers were outshot in the five minute overtime skate, but then pulled out the win during the shootout.
