The 2007 Buffalo Sabres Preview

The 2007 Buffalo Sabres Preview Special

It will start with offense on the first line and will not stop until the fourth line as 10 of the 12 starting forwards are ranked as O 4. With only D.Roy and J.Dumont saddled with the pathetic O3 but they will make up for that with their passing in which they are both 5L. Speaking of passing 11 of 12 forwards are L passers with the lowest of the L's being 4L Chris Drury."When Drury is the squad's second worst passer that can speak louder than any words coming outta my mouth.", said Buffalo coach Phil Housley.
It seems that the blight of the forwards surely must befall Ales Kotalik who clocks in with a 3K passing which his teammates had been giving him the business about in the locker room.

The four Left Wings scored 116 (nhl) goals and are led by second year player Thomas Vanek. Vanek was a huge disapointment in 2006 as the fans thought the rookie would lead the team in power play goals, he didn't and was at times relegated to fourth line duty in his rookie campaign. This season the sights are set high once again for the Austrian and Vanek has said he looks to live up to the hype from here on out. Alexander Semin has made his way back from Russia and may enjoy a fine season with Drury as his centre.

The four Centers scored 114 (nhl) goals and look to put up terriffic numbers in assists as well with the new passing formula. Coach Phil Housely expects to finally see a Sabre name in the league leader board in the assists catagory. Veteran pivot Dainius Zubrus bemoaned his training camp experience, "The coach has me playing on the fourth line. I think I deserve better than that. Hopefully, he'll let me play on one of the power play units."

The four Right Wingers scored just 105 (nhl) goals but fifth line fill in player rookie Drew Stafford is expected to contribute goals into the double digits. Last years leading Sabre scorer Miroslav Satan will try to maintain a 30+ goal pace and youngster Jason Pominville wants a chance to prove that he can crack that 30 goals barrier as well. Eight 20+ goal scores is not out of the question for the high octane fueled team in 2007.

The Defencemen bring a lot of game to the rink this season. Led by Brian Campbell the Sabres have five D4's marching on the blue line corps. Several K passers are in the mix while Campbell and veteran Alexei Zhitnik intend to rack up 10 goals and 50+ assists each. "I see absolutely no reason why I can't get 55 helpers, anyway that's what I'm shootin' for." said right defenseman Brian Campbell after his final pre season game.

In Goal there is Ryan Miller and Martin Biron a fine and steady duo which may well produce a number of shut outs along the way to a winning record and potentially high winning percentage. After an intense exibition game victory where he obtained the no.2 star, Ryan Miller said, "I think Marty and I are going to really get the job done. We know the offense is gonna rack up over 300 goals, we just have to keep our concentration level high and we should have a good time out there."

"The bench players are deep and young. "Mostly I will be going with the aforementioned Stafford and also another University of North Dakota kid, Paul Gaustad to spell the starters and give them a few games off over the course of the year. They are talented guys that can fill in nicely on any line, you name it, one through four." pontificated Housley. "I like this group even more than last year's conference championship team. It should be a lot of fun to coach for me, play for the athletes, and watch for the fans."

In summary the combination of tremendous offense, stifling defense, and the poised and steady goaltending make the 2007 Sabres even stronger than they were last season. And with some hard work, tenacity, and luck they could have an outcome that will leave Buffalo fans cheering on the last game of the season.

Hockey Hall of Fame Game

The HBL's two finalist teams met up via net play to play their final exibition game of the pre season to benefit the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Sabres wasted little time in jumping out for a small measure of payback having lost the Stanley Cup to the Senators several months earlier, when defensmen Dmitri Kalinin ventured in on a breakaway and scored in the first minute of the game.
Ottawa's Joe Sakic then went on and peppered the net with shots to tie it at 1-1. Then the Senators took the lead on a powerplay goal by Mike Fischer that beat the goalie on a rebound. Buffalo's newly acquired B.Lukowich evened the score late in the 2nd period.
Early in the 3rd period Jason Pominville went on a surge and scored the eventual game winner with a low wrister.

Panthers Finally Put One in the Pre-Season Win Column

Olli Jokinen scored two goals and added an assist as Florida out scored Atlanta in a barn burner. Roberto Luongo had his best game of the pre-season in net only allowing 3 goals on 30 shots.

"We had Calder and Booth out there tonight as Morrow and Olesz were each scratched before the game," Jacques Martin said after the game. This time in an apparent good mood the coach was only too happy to answer all of the questions the gather press core had for him. There was even a reporter from the Tampa Bay Window in the crowd asking if the coach thought that the latest predictions for Florida to finish 2nd in the division was a reality.

"Of course it's a reality, it's not like we're the Bad News Bears up here!," Martin replied. "I think we have a real good shot at finishing anywhere but 6th again. Don't get me wrong, six is a good number, as in original six, six days of creation, etc. etc. but I damn sure don't want to finish the season in sixth place again. Get what I mean"

No doubt about it, Martin was pumped up by this win. He was even talking to his goalies again after this one. It's amazing what one win will do for a team's confidence level.

Panthers Drop Third Straight Exhibition Game

The contest started out all right with Kolnik and Jokinen each scoring in the first 8 minutes of the game. Unfortunately for the Panthers, once again Luongo is unable to defend his net giving up the next four goals of the game. Coming back to within one goal in the third Krajicek scored to make it 4-3 with 13:30 left in the final period. Gaborik sealed the victory for the Wild with goal in the fifteenth minute of the final period.

Jacques Martin seemed extremely agitated during a post game press conference where he said that his goalies had better shape up.

"Friggin' Luongo is looking like that fella from San Jose lately... um what's his name Evgeni something?" Martin said. "Oh yeah, Luongo is making Nabokov look like Patrick Roy."

Defending Cup Champs Destroy Florida in Exhibition

Before you could say boo, the Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Schubert and Sakic. At the end of the first period it was 6-1 and the Ottawa club never looked back. "There was nothing good that we can take away from this loss," said Florida Head Coach Jacque Martin. "It was all, bad!"

Panthers Drop Exhibition Opener in Calgary

Panthers outshoot the Flames almost 2-1 but found it difficult to get the puck past Ray Emery. Flames score 3 unanswered goals in the third period to take the wind out of the Florida sails.

FLYERS SHUTOUT NJ

Philadelphia, PA- The Flyers improved their preseason record to 1-1 with a 5-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils last night at the Wacovia Center. It looked like it was going to be a chippy game early. NJ's Keith Tkachuk & Patrick Sharp dropped the gloves 2:11 into the game, each recived 5 for fighting & 2 for roughing, but Tkachuk also was given the instigator. A few minutes later, Alexandre Picard & NJ's Jason Smith looked like they were ready to go too, but the refs stepped in before punches could be thrown, but each received minors.

The Flyers got goals from 5 different scorers. Jeff O'Neill scored on Martin Brodeur at 11:51 in the first. At 15:53, Simon Gagne scored a PP goal. In the second, Marc-Andre Bergeron welcomed Scott Clemmensen to the game with the Flyers 2nd PP goal. In the third, Dany Heatley scored just 30 seconds in & Jeff Carter added a SH goal at 7:40.

J.S. Giguere stopped 19shots (4/4 GR) & Antero Niittymaki stopped 11. Flyers out shot N.J. 32-30, and went 2 for 4 on the PP while stopping all 5 N.J. PP chances

FLYERS DAILY CLIPS

LECLAIR ONE OF TWO TO GO AS FLYERS SIGN DOWD, LOSE SCRIMMAGE

PHILADELPHIA,PA- The Flyers had a real busy weekend.

Flyers Lose 3-1 to Team USA in first annual match-up.

In honor of Herb Brooks, the Flyers played their first annual Brooks Classic as they matched up against the 1980 Gold Medal winning USA team. Team USA took the FLyers 3-1. Eric Strobel scored the lone first period goal as USA outshot the Flyers 11-6. Slava Kozlov got the Flyers on the board 10:12 of the 2nd & the teams went into the dressing room knotted at 1 with USA holding an 18-15 shot advantage. Buzz Schneider broke the tie at 4:27, and the Flyers were pushing hard but the wind was taken out of their sail's when Rozsival took a penalty & Rob McClanahan took advantage at 15:23. Dave Christian assisted on all 3 USA goals. Jim Craig stopped 8/9 GR's and JS Giguere stopped 6/8. USA outshot the Flyers 29-27.

Stuffed In The Free Agent Market

Rookie GM Jack Santos was schooled by other owners in the free agency pool. Basing his offers on past numbers, he way underbidded on the top FA's. Mike Commodore signed a record breaking FA deal for 16.63 withe Montreal, so it's not surprising that he laughed at the Flyers 2.5 offer. Flyers also went after Tom Poti & Karel Rachunek in hopes of signing at least two of those three.

Dowd Signs With Flyers

After being shutout, Santos made a call to Jim Dowd (who lives in the same hometown as Santos). The two set up a meeting at Dowd's sister Kim's bar The Ark. So after nibbling on cajun shark bites & frosty mugs of Miller Lite & watching the Mets bullpen blow a series to the Phillies (both are Met fans), Dowd walked away with a contract, signing for 750,000. He'll be bringing in his PK experience to the Flyers & should be a 4th line center.

LeClair & Ellison Released

The Flyers released John LeClair & Matt Ellison. LeClair came into camp bothered by nagging injuries & wasn't showing any signs of the scoring touch that he once possesed. LeClair said that it is not a surprise, "Jack & I discussed this a few weeks ago & we agreed going in that if I wasn't pulling my weight in camp, he would let me explore other options in the waiver period."

Matt Ellison's release also came as no surprise given the fact that he would be ineligible to play this season & is not expected to be in the Flyers plans for the future.

Two More Games Slated For Preseason

The Flyers will play at least two more games before wrapping up camp. They will host the New Jersey Devils & New York Rangers.

Pittsburgh Signs Free Agents

PITTSBURGH(AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins introduced the local media and fans to the newest members of the club, defensemen, Tom Poti and Karel Rachunek. The two are part of the second-highest priced signing class in the brief HBMHL history, behind Mike Commodore, Martin Skoula and Jeremy Colliston of Montreal. Rachunek scored a goal and added 17 assists in the inaugural HBMHL season with the New York Islanders, then spent all of last season with Pardubice in the Czech League. Poti played in 107 games scoring 13 goals and 28 assists with New Jersey and Vancouver in his two seasons of HBMHL experience, including a career high 12 goals and 15 assists with New Jersey in 2004-05. GM Greg Malone said, "Our (locker) room should be fun at Bean Pot time with Poti joining fellow BU alumns Freddy Meyer and Ryan Whitney, and BC faithful Brooks Orpik and Rob Scuderi." "Seriously, these two add a much needed offensive presence to our blueliners.", added Malone.
In related Penguins news, Josef Melichar, training camp holdout, may be on the trade block. Any team requiring a left defenseman, who chews up a lot of games (70) should contact Penguins management at Rockets300th@Comcast.net.

Panthers Cut Defenseman Brad Norton

Florida Panthers HoldingsMiami - The Panthers today announced they have cut Brad Norton from their team. All indications are that Norton left on good terms according to a team official speaking on the condition of anonymity. "Norton was called into the front office by the owner, and there was no yelling heard coming from the his office. So the meeting must have gone all right."

Some fans standing in line for tickets to the Panthers Sunrise Series Scrimmages, said they heard the sound of breaking glass and some very loud yelling coming from the direction of the locker room. These unconfirmed reports are academic now though, as Norton and GM Jacques Martin held a press conference before the morning skate. Norton said he was considering retirement, but that he hadn't made up his mind just yet. "It is possible that I will get a shot at some playing time somewhere this year," Norton said.

The Panthers training camp will consist of 34 players – 22 forwards, 10 defensemen and two goaltenders. Florida will play four preseason games, with the first on the road Sept. 23 vs. Calgary in Saskatoon, 9 p.m. Florida will return home for two preseason games on Sept. 25 vs. Ottawa, 12:00 p.m. and Sept. 26 vs. Minnesota, 7:30 p.m. The final preseason game will be Sept. 28 at Atlanta, 7:30 p.m.

The Panthers will practice in two different groups for the first 10 days of camp. The training camp roster is attached to this release, and the Training Camp schedule is listed below. Please note that the times on the schedule are always subject to change.
